Do the propers for this feast exist in English? (Kathy, Adam?)

Does anyone know of a simple hymn which might be used for this feast. I've found two: "Jesus, Glory of the Angels" and "Hail Bright Archangel, Prince of Heaven". I'm not thrilled with the tunes for either one. Does anyone know of anything wonderful about the Archangels that won't take my amateur choir more than a few rehearsals to learn?

We are usurping the regular readings this day for this feast.

  • Here are a couple of choices, both rousing hymns:

Michael, Prince of All the Angels (William J. Marsh?) is from the newer edition St. Basil Hymnal. The 3rd verse contains mention of the other archangels.

Thou Warrior Angel of the Lord (St. Michael) by J. Singenberger, from the St. Rose Hymnal. It is 2-part.

Here is the notation for the St. Michael prayer: http://thewayofbeauty.org/files/2012/11/STMichael.pdf

  • For propers in English, you might ask Ben Yanke. His Ferial English Propers include the Proper of Saints. On his website he indicates that "much of the collection is complete, but it is not yet been posted publicly."

Ye Watchers and Ye Holy Ones?
  • I'm with Adam Wood; I always use that hymn on that day since it singles out every type of angel.

Except, to fit the meter, Riley used "princedoms" instead of "principalities"

  • If you are not looking for the exact MR3 translation, Burt's Anglican Use Gradual has them (simple psalmtones), as does the Palmer-Burgess-Shields Plainchant Gradual (actual LU melodies).

(And I, also, am with Adam; Vigiles et Sancti must appear!--especially so the younger set can reel off the nine ranks of angels AND inform their parents that verse 2 refers to the Theotokos, Our Lady, Mater Dei... :-)

All you His angels, bless the Lord,
Whose mighty power and strength abound,
And who fulfill His every word,
And hearken to His voice’s sound.

This forum is such a wealth of knowledge! I googled the whole inter-webs for Catholic hymns for the archangels, for school mass next Friday, nothing! I come here, search archangels? This is the first thing that comes up! I think we will sing the byzantine Saint Michael prayer as a prelude! Thanks!!!

    For the EF:

For the OF, it is specifically the feasts of the three named Archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael.

Christ the Fair Glory, as found in the Lumen Christi Hymnal, would be a great piece for this day.
  • Dering Factum Est Silentium and Paul Halley's Mass of St Michael for the Patronal feast which has been transferred to this coming Sunday.
