Happy (belated) Hippopatermas Day

Sent to me yesterday by a friend. I'm pretending it's relevant here.
So . . . today is the Feast of St. Augustine, who was bishop of HIPPO, and he's also one of the Latin Fathers of the Church, and the Latin word for "father" is PATER, and the old way to name feasts was to take something important about the celebration and add -MAS (short for "Mass") to the end, hence Christmas, Michaelmas, Candlemas, etc. Therefore I humbly submit that today should be known as HIPPOPATERMAS!

If you agree with my proposal, spread the word, and next year everyone will be ready to go.

Keep the Faith with a little levity,
    Andrew.

P.S. Also, since yesterday was the feast of St. Augustine's mother St. Monica and the Latin word for "mother" is MATER, August 27 can be called HIPPOMATERMAS.

I have been spreading the gospel of Hippopatermas on FaceBook, where people seem enthusiastic.

Hippopater and Hippomater? Don't know about that. It sounds like Augustine is married to his mother.

And pity their poor children - suffering from hippofilia.

I just told that to my wife and daughter. A double spit-take! They appreciated the pure chantgeekiness of it.

  • And a further reflection on -mas or -mass as a suffix.
The joke may very well be on those who are always trying to get Christ out Christmas:
were they to succeed in doing so, they would still be left with.... MASS!
