The Church of Our Saviour, 59 Park Avenue, New York City is currently accepting applications for all positions in the parish’s professional choir (SATB). The choir sings on Sundays at the 11:00 a.m. Mass (Novus Ordo) throughout the academic year. The Sunday schedule consists of a 9:15 a.m. rehearsal in preparation for the 11:00 a.m. Mass. There are extra liturgies at Christmas and during the Paschal Triduum (Holy Week), at which attendance is mandatory. While there are no weekly rehearsals scheduled, extra rehearsals will take place at the beginning of the season and in advance of Christmas and the Paschal Triduum. A full schedule of appearances is provided at the beginning of the season.
The Choir of the Church of Our Saviour is a professional ensemble that specializes in sacred music (Mass settings and anthems/motets) for the Roman Catholic liturgy, including but not limited to Gregorian Chant and Renaissance polyphony through contemporary choral works. Solo and quartet opportunities are available at the discretion of the Director of Music. Candidates for the position must be active vocal artists. Some requirements include:
• Experience singing in a professional choral ensemble • Exceptional Sight-singing and quick learning skills • Strong vocal technique is required • Ability to sing a cappella is required • Ability to sing Gregorian Chant (in modern notation, with a willingness to learn neumatic notation) • Ability to be independent on own voice part and be comfortable demonstrating preparedness by singing in a quartet • Ability to sing in English and Latin, as well as other languages, as necessary • Strong small-ensemble singing technique and understanding is crucial. • Ability to blend volume, tone, and vowels is required • Flexibility in singing various choral styles and periods is required. • Ability to switch between several styles of music is required. • Preparing music outside of rehearsals is expected.
