SCOPE: The candidate will plan for and develop the music ministry of the church and also plan for and develop the music program in the school. He/she should be an accomplished organist, and able to lead a choir from the bench. He/she will be present at the four weekend Masses: the vigil mass on Saturday, the two morning Masses on Sunday, and the Extraordinary Form of the Mass Sunday mid-day. He/she will also be responsible for the music for all Feast days, holidays, funerals, weddings, and other special events held at the church.
CHARACTER AND NATURE OF POSITION: The candidate will assume over all responsibility for one choir, a men's schola and a girl's schola, as well as the children's choir from the school. The candidate be a Catholic in good standing with the Church, a person of character and integrity who views this position as a calling from God. The candidate will have technical mastery of the various aspects in his/her area of expertise and a desire to assure that all involved in the worship and music ministry realize their maximum potential through effective leadership and training. The candidate would minister in such a way that people feel encouraged and appreciated in their ministry.
KNOW HOW: This position requires a multi talented musician. The candidate should have practical experience in planning liturgical music, hiring singers and instrumentalists when needed, and working with the clergy in organizing the ministry. He/she must have the flexibility to work with all age groups. An appreciation for the tradition of the Church with regard to liturgical music as well as recent Magisterial teaching on the use of music in liturgy is necessary, as is an ease and familiarity with Gregorian Chant.
Principal Functions 1. Meet weekly with the choirs for rehearsal. 2. Coordinate with Pastor the general and specific types of service music, and other special participation to be used in order that the liturgies may be coherent and that soloists, ensembles, and instrumentalists may be adequately prepared for such services. 3. Seek to select and to use proper music in coordination with the pastor. 4. Supervise, develop, and train volunteer musicians, cantors and lectors. 5. Oversee and assure maintenance and care of all equipment for his area of ministry. 6. Evaluate and suggest equipment needs for his area of ministry.
Duties and Responsibilities: 1. Identify, recruit, and train gifted individuals, and encourage those persons as they become involved in the music ministry. 2. Prepare the annual budget request and maintain all music accounts. 3. Ensure the care, maintenance, and inventory of all music and equipment. 4. Any other duties that may arise.
