Alan Grey
  • Hi

Although little known, this composer wrote an evening service which is reasonably well documented, but I am trying to find his Te Deum and Jubilate. Can anyone help, please ?

  • Search for "Alan Gray" and "Te Deum". There are lots of entries. Note the spelling of his surname.

Alan Gray (1855 - 1931) was the director of music at Trinity College, Cambridge (1893-1930), where he achieved quiet fame as both a choral conductor and an organist. His book of hymn descants is still considered one of the best ever published.
  • If you're looking for the actual scores, have you contacted Lois Fife or Cliff Hill? They're probably the two best music importers in the country.
  • Thanks Daniel - I can find Alan Grey (1855 - 1935) but no Alan Gray.

  • Is this what you're looking for?

Lois and Cliff are the best for getting any Anglican music.
  • Thanks - now got the Te Deum from Musicroom but still looking for the Jubilate. I shall try Lois & Cliff.
  • If you like Alan Gray, you may well like John Ireland too. The opening melody in his English-language Te Deum bears a strong resemblance to the beginning of a certain British pop song of 40 years ago.
