Well, it appears I may be jumping headlong into the EF, musically, but I am not very fimiliar with the musical end of things.
Anyone have a good online guide where I could understand the calendar, feast day structure and rank (what does 3rd class even mean?) and general structure of the rites from a musical perspective?
Massive thank you, and keep me in your prayers, please.
Work at a parish that uses the EF every day for 5 years. Oh, bummer. That's what I've done and I still don't get the calendar. I have to nose through the FSSP ordo.
I can sing. I can teach others to sing. But the world will turn to ash if I can ever get my mind around the older calendar. Or the newer one, for that matter. My only recourse has been to stick to the music and double check with the priests on matters calendarial. (I am the very model of a modern singer general.) All this to say, do not despair! There are no cliff notes, no handy charts- except perhaps the ordo. Love it all anyway. :)
Ok, now I'm trying to be helpful on a more precise basis... sorry for the digression, Ben.
June 12 is a Wed, feast of St. John of San Fecundo, Confessor. 3rd class. Liturgical color is white. Gloria, yes. Credo, no.
Propers would be from the Common of a Confessor not a Bishop, Os justi, starting on page 1200 of the LU. And they're pretty groovy, as we still say here in the land of fruits and nuts.
Proper Collect is on pg. 1488 of the LU.
Check with the celebrant to make sure a votive mass is not planned. I think it could be, but I'm not sure. Be of good cheer and sing your heart out! Do not let the multitudinous details drag you down or trouble your enormous brain!
I check with the priest as well because as MaryAnn says there are times when it comes into question, haven't figured out the votive Mass thing either. It gets easier and Sundays of course are a breeze!
This is great news, Ben, and very much needed. Last week I had some questions about what options there were for a Missa Cantata on June 19 of this year and one of the forum readers, Patricia Cecilia, was extremely knowledgeable and helpful.
Don't know if she's around to see this, but she gave me very exact information and I was so grateful since this is obviously a pretty arcane area.
The thread where we were discussing the EF ferial Masses was "Question: Gloria and Credo at EF Votive Mass?" If I remember correctly, Patricia mentioned the FSSP Ordo in English as a helpful resource.
Psallite Sapienter looks fantastic. That was exactly what I needed, for the ritual requirements of the music. I'll skim through that now, and probably buy a copy if this situation works out.
