The state of Catholic church music (1992)

Today I came across an interesting article by Princeton's Peter Jeffery: a report on the state of Catholic church music in the US: or rather its state as of 1992, when he wrote the piece to set a mission for the music department at Boston College.

He discusses the low level of congregational singing in American parishes, presents an analysis of five "models of church music" ("Sacred Music", "Inspired Art", "Pastoral Music", "the 'Folk' Mass", "Hymns and Spiritual Songs"), and offers some proposals.

One of my favorite articles on church music. It really made me rethink my approach to church music entirely.
