Almost all chant as set down. "Pueri Hebraeorum" - Victoria (distribution of palms) Mass 17. Credo IV Offertory: Improperium - O. Lassus. Then, v. 1 of the Offertory chant (Do = G, motet is in G) from Offertoriale spliced in: siglia placed at "consolantem" in Tenor (Bar 28.25) in Lassus, repeat from siglia after the verse is chanted.) (This filled out the whole of the Offertory time quite well.) Communion - Christus Factus Est - Anerio. Recessional hymn (unacc): Ah, Holy Jesus (Herzliebster Jesu)
Entrance Antiphon: Procession II from the Graduale Simplex (Esguerra) Psalm and Gospel Acclamation: Respond and Acclaim Offertory: When I Survey the Wondrous Cross (congregation) Antiphon by choir (GS Esguerra) Communion: Antiphon by choir (GS Esguerra) O Sacred Head Surrounded (congregation) Closing: Lift High the Cross (congregation)
This is the first time since I have been at this parish where we have employed all four propers (the Psalm counts as one of the four, correct?) The entrance and offertory antiphons were a new feature. I had suggested the offertory antiphon, but our priest surprised me by asking for the entrance antiphon as well. The only thing I would like to have changed is eliminating the closing hymn to depart in silence but, a step at a time and this Palm Sunday was a huge leap forward so I'm very, very happy with that.
(Long form outdoor processional: Hosanna to the Son of David, The Children of the Hebrews, both from By Flowing Waters) All Glory Laud and Honor (as the procession enters the nave) Sung Gospel Offertory: Crucifixus from B minor Mass (Bach) + SEP antiphon and verses during incensation Communion: SEP + O Vos Omnes (Pablo Casals) Recessional: Lamb of God (arr. F.M. Christenson)
The Crucifixus is quite a striking thing to do during offertory - my only regret is that it is accompanied by organ. I prefer to go all a cappella after the gospel.
We were in the midst of torrential rains all day yesterday - today it is snowing and cold. The outdoor procession into the church was cancelled, and we had the blessing of the palms in the back of the church. We sang:
All Glory Laud and Honor - entrance A Proulx psalm setting Latin chant Ordinary The Holy City - pastor's favorite, done every year Rice communion chant Crown Him with Many Crowns - communion hymn Jesus Shall Reign - recessional
We decided to end on a triumphant note, and let the events of Holy Week illustrate the fickleness of human acclaim and adulation.
Hosanna to the Son of David (ICEL) All Glory, Laud and Honor Psalm 22 - Ostrowski Gospel Acclamation - Esguerra O Sacred Head Surrounded Missal chants (English) SEP Communion Now We Remain (Haas) Were You There (and then because apparently people cannot be silent at this parish, Jesus Remember Me as they left)
They've come along way, they did a couple of those a cappella too (Hosanna, SEP communion, Were You There, and Jesus Remember Me). I was so proud of those kids on Sunday!
The adults did basically the same thing at the other two Masses, the choir sang Anima Christi (Burgo) as prelude, and Father Forgive Them (Scialla) also at communion.
Long form procession----included a riderless donkey--seriously!
Hosanna to the Son of David---from Lumen Christi Missal The children of the Hebrews---Lumen Christi Missal All Glory Laud and Honor--ST. THEODULPH Psalm from Parish Book of Psalms Simple Choral Gradual at Offertory When Jesus Wept---Billings Father if this cup---SEP Stay Here and Keep Watch---J. Berthier silent recessional
At communion on Saturday, we did the first movement of Pergolesi's Stabat Mater. On Sunday at communion, the adult choir did Bouman's two part Behold the Lamb of God (found in the Morning Star Choirbooks).
Oh -- and I sang Richard Rice's communio "Pater si non potest". (I love his communios with English verses). I was pleasantly surprised to see that unicorns have made it into the liturgy this weekend!

The Passion was accompanied by choking incense and a Pascal candle, and followed by a homily making the transition to a baptism. The silent departure was preceded by a round of applause for the catechumens. I expect next year a planning meeting might be called...

Mass XVII sung by congregation, with Credo I. Motet at offertory: Morales, Vigilate Motet at communion: Tallis, Sancte Deus Motet as recessional: Victoria, O vos omnes
The usual suspects, but one thing I was proud of: we did the "Hosanna to the son of David" chant, acapella, in the Narthex of the church, as the celebrant processed in. Never been done there in 60 years, and they (as in 300 plus people at 3 Masses) did just fine...

I have no fresh gossip about St. John Baptist, El Cerrito. Our last deanery collaboration was a 2008 Saturday Mass at the Oakland Cathedral with St Jerome's, but St. John's choir withdrew at an early stage.
Of special note at our house was Frank LaRocca's setting of the Ave Verum text. A stunning piece and sung reasonably well. SSAATTBB is pushing us, but it went well.
