Easter Vigil question

A colleague is looking for some advice:

I'm not sure how to handle part of the Easter Vigil. At my new church, they use a big baptismal pool, and after six baptisms, the priest and the candidates will be pretty wet, so they're all going to step out to some side rooms to change into dry clothes. Father expects that it will take up to 15 minutes for that. So what kind of music should I and the choir do during this time? Can I treat it as a break in the liturgy and make it a little concert?

Has anyone else had to deal with this sort of thing?

Yeah. We just did 2 anthems and 2 orchestral pieces - then they still weren't back so we got a lengthy improv on Vidi Aquam. Certainly not the ideal situation, but you make the best of what your dealt.

Side rant: yet another reason not to use those overblown baptismal ponds.

Hey Ben, weren't you at SLC last summer? Did you notice they had a spa at the Madeleine near the vestibule?
But I concur, unless you have a really cool and clean river nearby, avoid the immersion bit entirely. For adults anyway, just messing their hair up with the three splashes is trauma enough.
  • I remember my Aunt and Uncle's parish, run by a "Sister" back in the 90's that actually had a 30 minute coffee break, over in the parish hall, during the 3 hour long Vigil.

She also used to stand next to the priest, making the gestures as if she was concelebrating.

    No, I couldn't make this s**t up.

    Ahhhhh, the Saginaw days..

Ps: the once large rural parish (with a real pipe organ no less) has suffered under so much liturgical abuse for the past 25 years, it is slated to close this year, as almost everyone has died or left the church..
