A Little Tribute to Ostrowski....

It seems like at least once a year, we all post our appreciation for Ostrowski. It's his birthday today, so I figured it's a great day to pile on some praise.

Just imagine where the liturgical world would be without Ostrowski...

-We wouldn't have a dozen free Psalms to use each weekend, neatly organized.
-We wouldn't have several free Alleluias to use each weekend, neatly organized.
-We wouldn't have the Vatican II hymnal and it's nice SATB scores for free on the 'net.
-We wouldn't have the promise of a new Tridentine hymnal/Missal.
-We wouldn't have his enjoyable YouTube videos explaining profound thoughts in simple ways.
-We wouldn't have seen him in those quirky shirts he wore to the one Colloquium.
-We wouldn't have an intriguing lecture series on the mora vocis.
-We wouldn't have NEW Psalm-Tone propers being notated weekly!
-We wouldn't be able to make jokes about the fact that Ostrowski only gets 2 hours of sleep per night.
-We wouldn't have countless other things I can't think of right now.

This man is the energizer bunny of ecclesiastical music and we all owe him a great deal of thanks.

So, once again... Thank you, Jeff Ostrowski and happy birthday.

-We would have many (all?) of the practice videos for SEP
-We would have the awesome colloquium video, which was one of the things that initially got me hooked
-We wouldn't have the ENTIRE Nova Organi Harmonia online, and many of the other resources and old books posted there
-we wouldn't have his various "music for the liturgy" sites (such as the Jouges EF site, the Garnier alleluia site, the 18 ordinaries site, etc...)

It really is obscene... how much he's responsible for.

By the way, Ostrowski... stop celebrating your birthday and get to notating more Simple Psalm Tone Propers.

So true. He put together an entire HYMNAL, for pete sake!

He's one of the major shaker and mover in the sacred music world.

The other thing: each of these items listed are not small projects either. The hymnal probably took hundreds of hours, as did the chabanel compositions and the psalm tone proper project. The guy is amazing. And he's a dad, on top of it all!
  • He is one of the most gifted chant accompanists I know.

  • Thank you so very much for these amazing comments.

    I am deeply moved.

    P.S.

The Tridentine Missal & Hymnal went to print earlier this week!!!!

And we will be releasing several other books in early 2013.

I am very excited about these upcoming releases, and I cannot thank you enough for your continued support.
  • P.S.S.

I still contend that making available the entire NOH for everybody to enjoy was the "most significant" thing CCW has done. Before we facilitated this in 2008, I was pretty much the only one in the USA who owned the complete set (I know of only one other person who had the complete set).

I've observed that many of the "big" Catholic publishers have subsequently adopted the NOH method of musical notation . . . and some of them have even claimed copyright over it !!! (not kidding!)

I think it's been pointed out on this forum before that publishers are the LAST place you should go to figure out if something is (really and truly) copyrighted.

Ben, I'm so glad the Colloquium video had an impact on you.

You mean they tried to copyright stemless notation? Who did that?

I'm gonna ask my lawyer friend if it's possible for me to copyright standard notation.

  • Up with JO!

Nearly everything for free on the site had some jerk out there claiming it was copyrighted. If the trolls had their way, this movement would barely exist

Right, but those trolls realize that it is much easier to falsely claim copyright on something than it is to find a judge willing to hear their (false) case.
