Instrumental funeral

    Here's a new request (to me)

    There is a funeral coming up, which will not be a full mass but simply the liturgy of the word. The family wants some organ music, but no hymns or singing.

    Interesting.

    What to do?

    Since I assume you're wanting some more concrete advice than Mr. Wood's hilarious and brilliant response (that's the first time I've used the "Thanks" feature)... I would just improvise on Requiem Mass themes (the Introit and In Paradisum) since you'll want to have the music timed perfectly for the actions (i.e. processing the casket in and then out). Playing repertoire might require you to cut pieces short (especially in the procession).

    A responsorial psalm and Alleluia at least should still technically be sung in a liturgy of the word. But the psalm could be read and the alleluia could be omitted (should be if not sung).
