St. Mary’s Church in the suburban township of Nutley, NJ announces a new choral scholar program. Primarily intended for undergraduate students, the program offers the Scholars opportunities to gain experience in a variety of sacred music, including more demanding a cappella repertoire. During the academic year, four Choral Scholars (SATB) will sing in the church’s two choirs: the Parish Choir and Schola Cantorum. In the Parish Choir, which sings for the 10:30 Sunday Mass (10:00 warm-up) and rehearses Tuesday evenings at 7:00, the Choral Scholars serve as stipendary singers with occasional solo capacities as needed. At the 12 noon Sunday Mass, the Choral Scholars join the professional Schola Cantorum, which sings more advanced repertoire focusing on polyphony, for certain pieces and for a portion of the Schola’s rehearsal following the Mass and a break. Good sight-reading ability, ability to and enjoyment of singing without vibrato, and experience in choral ensembles is expected. Excellent compensation.
