Introduction:
It is the intent of the St. Peter Parish Community to insure that its liturgical experiences are ones that celebrate and strengthen the faith development of its people, thereby reaffirming the declaration of Vatican II which states that the Church’s worship is the “source” and “summit” of Christian life and action. This position reports directly to the Pastor.
Parish Liturgical Ministry
Coordinator will supervise the planning, preparation and/or assign duties for the proper execution of:
Liturgical seasons and their preparations.
Weekend Eucharistic celebrations.
Rites of the Order of Christian Initiation.
Other liturgical celebrations such as Taizé Prayer, Evening/Morning Prayer, Stations of the Cross, Tenebrae, Eucharistic Adoration, etc.
Director will collaborate with other parish ministries to ensure proper liturgical appropriateness of activities. This will include but not be limited to:
Schedule and have input into the development of training programs for various liturgical ministers such as lectors, Eucharistic ministers, ushers, altar servers, and Eucharistic ministers to the homebound.
Provide guidance to and oversee the activities of the Liturgy Commission.
Coordinate and collaborate with the Director of Religious Education and musicians to plan and execute appropriate liturgies for children and teenagers, including but not limited to Sunday youth liturgies, prayer services, reconciliations services, palm burning, school closing liturgy, First Reconciliation, First Holy Communion, and Confirmation.
Collaborate with Pastoral Minister in planning and implementing seasonal liturgies such as All Souls Day, Anointing of the Sick Mass, and funerals.
Director will oversee and, in some cases, perform the duties of purchasing, inventorying, and cataloging resource materials for all liturgical ministers and for parishioners’ spiritual development.
Parish Music Ministry
Director will be responsible for the planning, preparation, and execution of the following parish music ministries or activities:
Liturgical seasons, weekend Eucharistic celebrations, and all other liturgical celebrations such as Holy Week, Taize’ Prayer, Evening/Morning Prayer, Stations of the Cross, Tenebrae, etc.
Adult and children’s choirs, adult and youth bell choirs.
Train cantors.
Religious education involvement in special liturgies.
Design, process and print materials which enhance the participation of the congregation at special liturgical services.
Prepare and maintain rosters, music lists, and schedules for all parish musicians.
Collaborate with the parish musicians – pianists, organists, instrumentalists and cantors, to ensure adequate coverage of music at all liturgies including funerals and special liturgies.
Supervise the maintenance and repair of all musical instruments and equipment at the recommendation of the musicians.
Maintain choral library.
Maintain appropriate copyright licenses and permissions.
Continue personal musical and liturgical education by attending classes, workshops, and conferences.
Director will play an active role in the parish staff/spiritual life of St. Peter’s by
Working with others to help create a strong sense of community, worship and education.
Meet regularly with staff in formal and informal settings.
Communicate with the Pastor on a regular basis.
Prepare and monitor the liturgy and music budget.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities
Full knowledge and understanding of the following Church documents as they relate to execution of the duties assigned this position is required:
The New Roman Missal
General Instruction of the Roman Missal
Sing to the Lord – Music in Divine Worship (USCCB)
Ability to play piano/organ preferred.
Working knowledge of computer software programs including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Publisher required.
Familiarity with music composition software such as Finale or Sibelius helpful, but not required.
Be committed to facilitating quality liturgical experiences which work toward a sense of local ownership of worship.
Possess knowledge of Catholic liturgy and musical competency needed to adequately execute the duties of the position.
Possess the ability to work well with people; the congregation, the Pastor, and other staff members.
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in music or related field or 5 years direct experience in performing the essential duties of the position
