The Music Director is hired by and accountable to the Director of the Duke Catholic Center, and works collaboratively with the other members of the DCC ministry team.
Responsibilities: • Pastoral: o Be present for and lead the liturgical music for all Sunday and Holy Day Masses o Be present for and lead the liturgical music for all Tuesday and Wednesday Masses o Be present for and lead the liturgical music for Wednesday Holy Hour 8-9pm o Encourage and direct student leadership of musical ensembles o Plan and carry out weekly music rehearsals with choirs and musicians o Work with students and celebrants in the selection of liturgical music for all DCC liturgies o Serve as a resource for planning other prayer and worship moments • Administration: o Assist with selection, training and supervision of Cantors, Choir members, and student musicians o Actively participate in regular staff meetings o Maintain appropriate music library o Establish relationships with liturgical music ministers of the Chapel congregation • Professional Development: o Participate in at least one continuing education program each year for professional development o Commit appropriate time to continue developing spiritually as a Minister of the Gospel • Performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications: • Education: o Minimum Bachelors Degree in Music • Musical o Accomplished pianist and comfortable playing the organ o Accomplished leader of song (able to play piano and lead the congregational singing) • Other: o Practicing Roman Catholic preferred o Experience in Roman Catholic Liturgical Music
Time Commitment: • At least 20 hours per week (August 15-May 15): o 5 hours leading/playing for 2 Sunday Masses (11am/9pm) o 2 hours liturgical planning o 6 hours of choral and instrumental rehearsals o 4 hours leading/playing for select weekday services (Wednesday Holy Hour, 2 weekday masses Tuesday/Wednesday) o 3 hours being present at DCC events to connect with students (Tuesday Night Dinners, etc.) o Time during Holy Week will exceed 20 hours • At least 5 hours per week (May 16-August 14): o 2.5 hours leading/playing for 1 Sunday Mass (9pm) o 2.5 hours planning for future musical programming/ministry o Possible creation/rehearsal of a summer choir
