What were Vespers like before Vatican II?

    I work in a parish that was founded by Poles many years ago.  One of the old timers told me that Vespers were a big deal on Sundays.  He said the church bell would ring at 3p and everyone would run back to church.  There are many settings for Vespers in the music library here, most in Latin.  Does anyone know what the Order of Service was like?  I think it included Benediction.

    It is the way it still goes in the EF:

    Deus in adjutorium
    5 psalms with antiphons
    chapter
    hymnus
    magnificat with antiphon
    oration

    Benediction of the blessed sacrament can conclude Vespers, although it is not required.
