There's an interesting little piece in the June 2008 Gramophone magazine by Jed Distler, "A Chants Encounter," about the upcoming Universal release of chant from Stift Heiligenkreuz. We all know that the impetus for this second commercial push (remember the Monks of Silos?) is Xbox's Halo. Distler reminisces about the Joplin revival related to the film, "The Sting," and compares the relation between popular culture and classical styles.
BTW, if you don't read Gramophone, pick up a copy and enjoy reading reviews, classical music gossip, and festival publicity. And no, I have no connection with the publication.
It's great to see that Music for the Soul by Stift Heiligenkreuz is #11 on Amazon, beating Motley Crue, "Evil Urges," "Rock and Roll Jesus," and "Modern Guilt.," not to mention Madonna.
