BASIC FUNCTION OF POSITION
Coordinator working with the Director of the Office for Christian Worship with an emphasis on Music, Musicians and liturgical event planning for the Archdiocese of Detroit.
MAJOR DUTIES AND TASKS REQUIRED BY THIS JOB
Supports parish musicians develop excellence in their service. Lead responsibilities for planning, coordinating and executing archdiocesan liturgical celebrations at the Cathedral including the annual Chrism Mass, Ordinations, Rite of Election, Corpus Christi, Employee Masses, and unplanned for events such as Bishop Ordinations, Funerals, etc. Responsible for copyright permissions for Archdiocesan Liturgical Aids Provides workshops and direct consultation and formation for parishes, worship commissions and liturgical ministers, especially musicians, on the parish, school and archdiocesan level. Participates with the certification of Pastoral Musicians. Writes monthly electronic Liturgical Musician Update and provides job opening information for musicians. Coordinates and participates in the Mass for Shut Ins. Chairs and directs the work of the Music Advisory Committee. Develops and executes prayer services for central service departments and events, with particular collaboration with the Offices of Black Catholic and Hispanic Ministries. Sits on the Board of the local chapter of the National Pastoral Musicians and is the Archdiocesan representative to the national association. Is a staff resource to the Archdiocesan Worship Commission and the Art and Architecture Committee. Other duties as assigned by the office or department director.
QUALIFICATIONS
A Catholic who is familiar with the norms for Sacred Music, especially those formulated in Sacrosanctum Concilium and the documents promulgated for its implementation. Master’s degree in Liturgical Studies, Practical Liturgy, Church Music or related field is required. Knows the heritage of Sacred Music, especially chant and polyphony. Accomplished organist and musician. Is committed to advancing the style of celebration often referred to as “singing the Mass.” Respects the need for the texts sung at Mass to be authorized translations found in the Missal and the Lectionary. Three years experience in parish or diocesan pastoral work necessary. Bi-lingual (Spanish) preferred. Must have excellent communication and human relation skills, and extensive music experience.
