I met a parishioner whom I hadn't met before, and I asked her, as I often ask parishioners, "How are we doing with the music?"
She said that she has been in the parish for forty years, and in that entire time, "The music has always been the same."
I wonder how many people think more or less the same! We hear from people with strong opinions. How many of our salt of the earth parishioners continue to simply accept, cheerfully, whatever is made available?
I sing in a couple of choirs at my parish, and my wife often hears us sing at mass. If I ever inquire of my wife, "How did the choir sound today?" she always replies, "Fine," regardless of what we sing or how I think our performance went. I think this is indeed typical.
I just did music for a diocesan event. Lots of compliments, but most of them were either: -"I like how large the choir sounded." (or variations such as "full" "loud" or "powerful") -"I liked the tempo."
