History of the Preface and Eucharistic Prayer tones

Does anyone know of a good resource (preferably free or inexpensive as I'm limited on funds at the moment) on the history of the Preface and Eucharistic Prayer tones? I'm especially interested in the Praefationes in Tono Solemniori. Thanks.
