Attende Domine: What genre?
  • So I notice that "Attende Domine" has a repeated refrain. Is it somehow different than a typical hymn like one would find in the Divine Office? What was its original liturgical place? Does anyone know how old it is or composer info?

    Thanks!

The genre is a "prose", comparable to "Rorate caeli" for Advent. This page says is based on a Mozarabic litany and dates to the 10th century.

    In text, maybe.
The melody is late medieval, I recall. I think French but I'd have to look it up.

In what context was this hymn originally sung? And where is it best suited in today's liturgy?
  • I think the Variae Preces lists it as from the Liturgia Gothica.
