New ICEL Translation of the Mass: "Glory To God In The Highest" Organ/Cantor

Yesterday, I composed this SIMPLE CHANT GLORIA in honor of Blessed Ralph Sherwin (†1581).

Hopefully this will be helpful to some people, when we start using the new translation (in less than a year!). I also added the link at this BLOG.

My intention was to create a dignified setting that was not too long, would not become tiresome over the years, yet was easy enough for an average congregation to sing well.

I was really quite impressed with this. It's a very fine product, and I hope it gains widespread use.

My only beef, and I say it not to criticize, but to generate discussion, is with "hea-ven-ly". In listening, I found sounding too clear (if such a thing can be a complaint). I prefer "heavn'-ly King", and think this could have benefited from two notes on one syllable instead of vice-versa. What does everyone else think about this issue?

I take your point Gavin, if you're assigning the contraction to the first two notes of the "torculus," but I tend to think a congregation would be more at ease with Jeff's original.

Yes, the exposure from Catholic Liturgical Blogs like Chant Café, NLM, etc. has been FANTASTIC, and I'm so grateful.

But what I would like to know is this: how in the world did this YOUTUBE VERSION get more than 2,000 views in just four days??

None of the Catholic Blogs promoted it . . . they promoted the Vimeo (higher quality version).

Bump, because I think that this is really well done and worth another listen. It sounds...modern, in a good way. It is catchy and singable without being cliche or trite. It is dignified without being boring or inaccessible.

Although I am not a big fan of organ accompaniment to chant, the organ part as written is very effective and part of what makes it so appealing.
