Immaculate Conception (St. Mary’s) Church, a 500-family parish in Saint Albans, Vermont, seeks to hire a part-time Director of Music. Duties include playing organ (1944 Casavant) at three Masses each weekend, plus funerals and weddings as available, and singing at some or all Masses while also working regularly with cantors. The overall goal for this position is to move the parish’s music in a more Catholic direction, transitioning from mixed-quality hymns and contemporary-style Mass settings, to use of Gregorian chant and chant-inspired propers and ordinaries in Latin and English, plus other sacred music more consonant with tradition, including worthier hymnody. Hopefully this will involve starting a choir or chant schola in due time. Qualifications include at least basic organ competence; strong vocal skills; love and appreciation for the Catholic tradition of sacred music, including some knowledge of Gregorian chant and Church teaching on liturgical music, and a desire to deepen that knowledge if necessary; and ability to work in close cooperation with the parish priest. Salary $15,000 to $20,000, depending on qualifications. Contact Fr. Brian O’Donnell at fatherodonnell@gmail.com.
