I'm planning music for a parish Mass for the Solemnity of St. Joseph. Does anyone have information on the hymn Te Joseph? Any good anthems on the subject? Thank you.

This is one of the most beautiful Gregorian hymns of all time.

Wow, you're right, it's positively lyrical!

It is charming and dates from the 17th century. And there was a woman behind it - Sr. Clare Mary, a Carmelite who was instrumental in persuading Clement X to rasie the feast of St. Joseph on 3/19 to a double of the second class. According to Connelly's Hymns of the Roman Liturgy, she persuaded Juan de la Concepcion to write the new office.

We all know the Carmelites were positively mad for St. Joseph. And this is a very nice outcome of that fervor.

This may come in handy. St. Joseph is one of my favorite saints.

  • Kathy, I have a short paper from last year for a symposium on St. Joseph that examines some of the chants related to his feasts. It covers many of the popular twentieth century chant sources, and could point you to many different antiphons, responsories, etc.

Drop me a line and I'd be happy to email you a copy: matthew@osjoseph.org
