Perotin - Viderunt Omnes
  • Just heard Perotin's Viderunt Omnes for the first time.

    I am completely blown away.

At first I thought there was some mistake. "Surely I am listening to the latest avant choral work, directed by some post-modern musicologist on peyote."

It doesn't even seem possible that this music was created in the 1200s... this is "early music"?? It's richer and more complex than pretty much any other vocal music I've ever heard.

Wait until you get into the 14th century...
  • Check out his Sederunt Principes. Even more impressive IMO.
  • My schola in Western Massachusetts sang Sederunt at a lecture-recital and could best describe the experience as ecstatic.
