Obrecht's Parce Domine
  • Can anyone tell me where to find an english translation for this motet?

The text is not the same as that of the Parce Domine chant.

I have an edition from GIA with the original latin as well as a translation by Richard Proulx, meant for singing the motet in English if one so desires. But usually when they try to make the motet singable in English, the translation loses a lot.

I'll give it a go. Other suggestions welcome.

Parce, Domine, populo tuo, quia pius es et misericors.
    Exaudi nos in aeternum, Domine.

Spare, o Lord, your people. For thou are just and merciful. Hear us, Lord, forever.
  • Most everyone in our schola agrees that this is the best piece we've sung in years and years. Now looking for more more more Obrecht.

Just thought of another source. If you have access somehow (I don't): the New Obrecht Edition (editor. Ch. Maas) includes English translations for all of Obrecht's works. Volume XVI includes the motet Parce Domine.

Simon: Thou are is ungrammatical, it should be thou art.
  • Thank you Simon.
