For Easter we sang O Filii et Filiae at Communion and the feedback was very positive especially about the joyful Alleluia. So now I'd like to find another Communion hymn to fit the same melody: 10.10.10 triple time + Alleluia. I can see that Small Church Music and Hymnary.org return results in English, but the stresses don't fit. How should I search for Latin hymns with that pattern? It would be really nice to find one for Good Shepherd Sunday as that's next up. TIA BTW is Hymnody the right place for this question or should I ask in Gregorian Chant or General Music?
I dont particularly like all the hymns in the Adoremus Hymnal, but it does have a pretty good variety and you can search by melody and by 10.10.10. and such. At least the old version you can. Im not familiar with the latest edition
I think you're searching the wrong pattern. Here are some text options that could be paired with this tune (some of which would work particularly well):
I have recently acquired the Brompton Oratory Catholic Hymn book, it gives the pattern and I can see a number of English texts that might fit. No. 86 is O Filii in English, as 8.8.8+. No.78, Vulpius (Gelobt sei Gott) could work.
8.8.8 hymns would fit with a little melisma to make it up to the needed number of notes for the tune I have.
Thanks @ServiamScores, the first one fits, though again in English. The other texts look more doleful to me than I wanted, to pair with an Alleluia refrain - see example. Is there a way to find hymns specifically in Latin?
Sorry; it wasn't clear from your OP that you were looking exclusively for Latin hymns. I checked the Divine Office Hymnal, and the only 8.8.8 text is the Dies Iræ. lol. Time to message #cursedcarols on FB.
