Appropriate Gregorian Mass for the Sundays after Epiphany EF
  • For the Sundays after Epiphany in the Extraordinary Form, which Gregorian Masses would be appropriate?

It is still part of the traditional 40 days of Christmas (until 2 Feb) so we normally use Mass VIII, which not used often during the rest of the year, yet known well by the faithful.

  • We sing Missa XI for all of the Sundays after Pentecost. We usually continue singing Missa VIII on the Sundays after Epiphany until the Gesima Sundays begin. But I would rather sing Missa IX during this time because the congregation only sings it three times a year, and I would like to get Gloria IX more firmly ingrained in their memory. Isn't there a subtle Marian presence during Epiphanytide?

In 2016, Adam Bartlett wrote this: "Many of the Mass Ordinaries found in the Kyriale Romanum have designations for use in specific seasons or on specific classes of feasts, but these are not obligatory, nor are we bound to use them only in the season for which they are recommended. These recommendations have a strong precedent in our tradition as well as in the typical editions, but these are not hard-and-fast designations."

Circa 2000, when the monks from Solesmes came to Detroit, they said something similar to what Adam wrote.

I am just curious to learn of other opinions.
