Evaluating voices and assigning sections/voice parts
  • Hi, all! Christmas program was a success. Looking ahead to the spring with these kids. I'm going to include the older boys (grades 7,8,9) and I have a very nice cohort of girls in 6th already. It's these kids and. A few fifth graders who I would like to kind of evaluate a little more closely - not like auditions. Nobody gets cut. However, I would love to have a better feel for each student's range, flexibility, timbre, ability to match pitch/learn a melody quickly. I know lots of vocal exercises for part of this purpose - but what's a good, recognizable, well known song to use for this? I feel like once upon a time it was Somewhere Over the Rainbow. These days there's no guarantee they know it haha and probably not the best choice for the boys. Any ideas?? I would looooove for a small group of mixed teen girls and boys to come out of this for next Christmas / maybe for Burt's Christ in a Stranger's Guise or Carol of the Bells.

Try "America" and have them sing it in several keys to see where their voices lie.
