To learn more about the vision of music ministry at our parish, see this guiding document created by our pastor in tandem with other music ministry staff:

“The musical tradition of the universal Church is a treasure of inestimable value, greater even than that of any other art. The main reason for this pre-eminence is that, as sacred song united to the words, it forms a necessary or integral part of the solemn liturgy.”
    – Second Vatican Council, Sacrosanctum Concilium §112

The primary role of music ministry at Saint Rose of Lima is to glorify God through the prayerful worship of the parish community during liturgies, prayer services, and parish events. Saint Rose has a history of robust musical excellence and parishioner participation in our various musical groups. The music ministry program is made up of several musical ensembles, accompanied with the piano and organ as liturgically appropriate, that assist in fulfilling the mission of raising hearts and souls in praise. Along with striving for musical excellence, all ensembles strive to incorporate spiritual growth into their rehearsals and performances to enhance the faith life of choristers and thus the broader community.

All the faithful at Saint Rose of Lima are a priestly people, called to actively celebrate and participate in the liturgy. Since sacred music is integral to the liturgy, music ministry at Saint Rose unites the assembly in one heart and mind, and enables each worshiper to enter into the paschal mystery of Christ. This noble calling of the baptized is manifested in several ways in Saint Rose of Lima’s music ministry: Of primary importance is the assembly’s ability to participate in the acclamations, responses, psalmody, antiphons, and hymns of the liturgy. Liturgies at Saint Rose of Lima strive to uphold the directives of the liturgical rubrics while also creating a celebration that utilizes the full expanse of sacred music that the Catholic Church has to offer. Bringing forth “both old and new” (cf. Matthew 13:52), our celebrations embrace traditional forms while also infusing a new breath of the Holy Spirit within them. The principle of progressive solemnity is applied throughout the liturgical year, particularly in the addition of sung dialogues and antiphons of varying difficulty, as well as the singing of the Mass parts proper to the presider. In accordance with the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, entrance and communion antiphons are used at weekend liturgies. The entrance antiphon unites the assembly and joins our prayer to the prayer of the universal Church, while the communion antiphon creates an atmosphere for the fruitful reception of the Eucharist that is grounded in scripture and that fosters contemplation. Because active participation is not only exterior but also interior, silence is also an important feature of worship at Saint Rose. Beside the usual places for silence in the ritual, the seasons of Advent and Lent are especially distinguished by silences that express the expectant revelation of the Incarnate Word and of the Risen Lord.

The primary music ensemble of weekend and holy day liturgies is our 30-member Adult Choir that performs works ranging from renaissance polyphony to twenty-first century choral compositions, in addition to hymnody that embraces the principles of Catholic music set forth in the Church’s magisterial documents. This ensemble has a great sense of community with many members sharing life together outside of rehearsals and liturgies, as well as being a great support system for one another in the ups and downs of life.

In addition to the Adult Choir, Saint Rose has a sizable mixed voice Funeral Schola that serves at the approximately 45 funeral liturgies Saint Rose celebrates annually. This ensemble is set up to be flexible to allow for participation as member’s personal schedules allow. The Funeral Schola supports families that have recently lost a loved one through their presence at funerals in addition to creating an atmosphere of beauty and lifting up the community in song.

The Saint Rose of Lima Children’s Choir, directed by the Children’s Choir Director, was recently restarted in 2022 and has grown to 20 youth members in grades 2-8. The Children’s Choir assists in worship during the weekend liturgies about once a month during the school year while also teaching excellent choral skills and instilling a love for music in the hearts of its members.
