Help! For a music class
  • I’ve been an English teacher for almost 40 years, and I am very well aware that the very act of teaching teaches you what it is, you should teach and how you should teach it. Early in my career, I had an inspiration, literally as I was falling asleep, woke up the next morning and fleshed it out, and then used it in my classes for the next 20 years.

That said, I know that there are many people here who might be able to offer me a little bit of help. I teach at a “second chance high school in Washington DC. Most of the students are Latinos or African-Americans, 16-24.

The administration decided that for the final hour of the day, which we have to offer minors, it might be good to toss in some electives

Depending on student interest, I should begin in two weeks week teaching a nine-week one -hour -a-day class in basic music performance. It’s one of those cases where I absolutely know how to do everything that I would do in the class and have done it many times, but I’ve never taught it.

The basic structure is first day Melody and Harmony,
    second day rhythm,
    third day lyrics,
fourth day record a project. obviously, one day is going to bleed into the next

The only thing I’m really worried about. Is material for the melody track

If This one will play, ( linked beliw)I think this would be perfect for my students because it really requires no experience. However, I know one startswith rounds, etc., etc. if any of you have recommendations for material to use forthat kind of class, I am all ears and would be eternally grateful. Yes I know the suggestions are very often, “write a phrase and have the students blah blah blah. I just haven’t written much music

I have a good basic plan, which I ran past my music teacher of 20 years, she said “you have everything except, “the nuts and the bolts, and that’s what im worried about

    Peace kenneth
