New concert Mass premiering in Chicago
  • Greetings. I'm a music director in Chicago, fresh off my first Colloquium.
I also am a composer of concert music and PhD student at the Univ of Chicago. http://jbancks.com

If you are in Chicago, I would like to invite you to a world premiere of a new concert Mass which was commissioned from me by the fantastic organization Soli Deo Gloria, which will be premiered at St. John Berchmans Church in Logan Square by the Millennium Chamber Players (professional new group in Chicago). It's scored for chorus, orchestra, and soloists, and the concert will also feature Mozart's Requiem.

Colloquium for me was both a thrilling and unsettling experience... It's going to be a long (multi-year) process to integrate what I learned during that crazy week into parish life... Won't be easy for this impatient music director. The good part was, I was able to immediately use so much of that week's experiences in composing (and now finishing) this commission!

The piece is "Mass for All Saints" (Missa Omnium Sanctorum), and I'm setting some of the propers from All Saints Day (Introit, Offertory, Communion), along with the Asperges Me at the opening and a Litany of the Saints in the middle. I still have to pay up to CMAA for the Gregorian Missal I lifted from the back tables, but I've made really good use out of it while composing.

    Hope to see you there!
