Director of Sacred Music Status: Exempt – Part-time Ministerial Position that reports to the Parish Administrator Start: ASAP
Job Description: The primary role of the Director of Sacred Music is to provide and coordinate music for weekend Masses, Masses on obligatory solemnities, weddings and funerals. This ministry requires work in a Catholic environment with the ability to elevate minds and hearts towards God through worship. It requires an understanding of the Church's vision of sacred music, and the ability to work with the parish priest to guide the parish in that vision. The Director of Sacred Music will assist the Administrator in the purchase of a new organ within the next year.
Duties include three weekend Masses, directing the choir, and cantors for the parish.
Qualifications and Requirements: • A Catholic in good standing who regularly and actively participates in the sacramental life of the Church • Comfortability playing music from the St. Michael Hymnal • Familiarity with the Sacred liturgy, including the General Instruction of the Roman Missal and Church documents on sacred music • Ability to direct and lead congregational singing • Proficient at piano, organ, and singing
Responsibilities and Duties: • Arrange music for all parish liturgies • Play at all weekend Masses – Saturday 4p.m., Sunday 8a.m. & 10:00a.m. • Play at weddings and funerals (average 1 Wedding / year, 8-10 funerals per year). • Play on Solemnities that are not on weekends. Christmas, Immaculate Conception, Ash Wednesday, Holy Week liturgies etc. • Recruit and train cantors and choir members • Schedule all musicians – qualified organists/pianists’ subs, cantors • Recruit and hold rehearsals for choir members weekly • Assist couples select music for weddings • Assist families select music for funerals • Other duties as assigned by parish administrator This is a part-time position with some flexibility on hours outside of the Mass schedule
Salary is commensurate with experience and agreed upon schedule
