Spanish hymnal

    My apologies, I know there'a thread on this somewhere but I can't seem to find it.

    Has anyone looked at this option for a Spanish language hymnal? It looks pretty good.

    At our tiny N.O. parish, 32% of the people are Spanish speakers, and Father likes the idea of a bilingual Mass. Luckily, I speak fluent Spanish. For now, I have been singing one verse of the (modal) responsorial psalm in Spanish, the chanted offertorio completely in Spanish, and a brief offertory hymn in Spanish.

    The rest is English and a bit of Latin (Marian antiphons and anything for a specific occasion, such as Pange Lingua for the transfer of the Blessed Sacrament on Holy Thursday.) I'll do some Latin hymns and chants for feast days also. The Kyrie is Greek, the rest of the ordinary is English but working toward Latin.

    I do not like Flor y Canto, although I used it exclusively for Spanish Mass in several different parishes, for 15 years (before I knew anything about Tradition). I have been searching for traditional Spanish hymns and found the above link, and also these gems: (somebody may have already offered these links in another post; my apologies...)

    Since I make a worship guide each week, these types of PDFs are very useful to me and I can use selected hymns from these collections instead of purchasing a hymnal.

    Just as a side note, if you want the propers in Spanish there is often a post about that from ccwatershed with the propers in Spanish. I see them in the website emails once a week.

    Speaking from experience, I suggest running away from "Unidos en Cristo" by OCP.

    Noel, it's so awesome that your resources are free! I'm sure many many people appreciate you making these available. Thank you.

    Diapason, today I was at a parish 30 minutes away and took a look at their Unidos in Cristo missalette. No Sunday propers but they do have daily propers. Weird.

    Also it's not set up very well, visually. It just looks crowded and confusing.

    Thumbing through I noticed that the melody of the responsorial psalm for a particular Sunday was different in English than in Spanish. Not sure if it's always that way, but in my opinion they should be the same melody. Otherwise that missal can't be used for bilingual Masses. And keeping the melodies different doesn't promote unity very well. Why call it "Unidos en Cristo" if each language has its own psalm melodies? I didn't look at any Gospel acclamations but maybe they're different also.

    For responsorial psalms at our parish, I sing only one verse in Spanish. I just choose the verse in Spanish which is the most adaptable to the melody of the English psalm, which is usually Chabanel and sometimes Esguerra. The other verses are English. It's easier for me to do it this way.

    Andrea, thank you. I have a couple of different 1962 Spanish missals and they work very well for me. I also get Jeff's emails and find his wealth of information quite helpful.

    The psalm melodies are the same for English and Spanish in the Lectionary Psalms volume of Oramos Cantando from GIA if that's something you're interested in
