My pastor did the renewal of baptismal promises with sprinkling in place of the Creed today as he did on Easter Sunday. I was under the impression that this was only done on Easter Sunday, and the sprinkling takes the place of the penitential rite in other Sundays of the year, but now I’m second-guessing myself. Does anyone know the answer to this? Anytime I try to research anything with the sprinkling rite in the N.O., I come up with more questions than answers.
The renewal of baptismal promises, followed by the sprinkling of the faithful only takes place at the Easter Vigil. It cannot be done outside the Easter Vigil.
However, when Baptism is celebrated on Sunday during Mass, the Creed is substituted by the questioning of the person receiving baptism (or the parents and godparents), to which all acclaim ‘Amen’.
On Easter Sunday it is recommended that the sprinkling rite substitutes the penitential act using the water that was blessed at the Vigil Mass, just as it may be done on any other Sunday (but mind the different wording of the prayer before the sprinkling).
Then I think the USA missal must be different from the Dutch. Because we are optionally allowed to repeat the renewal of baptismal promises and the sprinkling on Easter Day.
