New English Responsorial Psalms
  • Hello! I am a very long-time lurker on this forum, but I thought I would join and share a project I am working on of a new setting of the complete Responsorial Psalms (plus other useful responsorial antiphons and Gospel acclamations). In the UK we have a new translation of the Lectionary and I was so dissatisfied with what else I found on offer.

They are for performance by soloist or unison choir with some kind of keyboard, or SATB parts with the same (or unaccompanied), or even perhaps with a guitar (not really recommended!). Various combinations of solo or choir can be done, and they are meant to just be flexible. They frequently draw on relevant Gregorian head-motifs or more extended quotations, and many use Gregorian Psalm tones for verses. It's a very varied set. Some are rhythmic, some are not. Some get more than one setting in case the more festal one is too hard.

These are in progress, and I hope will be complete by around November this year, when they will hopefully start their journey towards being on sale. I am posting progress on my YouTube channel (only Year C on there, though A and B are also being set concurrently), and we are using these at my parish and tweaking them if we discover things in need of tweaking.

I have a playlist here which I add to: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLe1D2yngDVYL3iNmfXEMI350-EUNU8pv2

    Some favourites of mine:

    Nativity Vigil: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQlaxvT99Sw
Nativity Midnight Mass (I like the energy): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUBcyHLtoc8
Epiphany (I like the Eastern thing): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b65pcIVcyBo
    Presentation (more energy!): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=As4t1TIyF7g
    Ash Wednesday: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MLpnuvAGKrQ

Why post here now when I cannot offer these at the moment? I think I am just looking for a bit of encouragement for this as it feels daunting in some ways. And any comments that you might have that would be useful!

    Rob. :)
