Self-published pew resource?
  • Does anyone have any experience assembling and having printed a pew book for a congregation? Here we are interested in having a bilingual (English and Spanish) book with side-by-side Order of Mass, benediction, Stations of the Cross, novenas, instructions for the Rosary/Divine Mercy, confession, etc.

Talk to Noel Jones -- he'll help you make your way through the process

I made a hymnal this past year. Time consuming, but not too difficult.

Producing your own hymnal by yourself is a huge undertaking as I found out when I produced my Hymns to St. Joseph. Proof reading the text is probably the most difficult part of the process, every once in awhile I find a misspelling, it's frustrating as well as embarrassing.

Noel Jones was very instrumental in helping me navigate the "Amazon rain forest" of publishing, which can be quite challenging. You can reach him through his website Sacred Music Library.

I am a publisher of my own music, hymnals, devotional, etc. If you use the right tools (apps and printer) you can create very nice pubs. At the moment I am completely revamping all of my websites, so they are being updated on the fly and also hosted live at the same time. My main site (http://www.FrancisKoerber.com) is where you can find info about the Fleur De Lys Hymnal. The link is at the top of the page. I recommend these apps preferably on a Mac.

    InDesign (layout)
    Illustrator (vector graphics)
    Photoshop (raster graphics)
Sibelius or Dorico (modern music notation)
    GABC (Gregorian Chant notation)

    UPDATE

    Here is page about hymnal.

^I recommend doing the chant in LaTeX (or getting someone to do it) then do the rest of the layout in your preferred DTP software. The Cistercians are doing this for all chant books. Which is uh crazy. But what is done is done.

The problem is that the online editors can’t handle even features such as the manual line breaks which came to gabc and therefore Gregorio later.

Inserting a PDF or converting it to some other format is not different as far as I can tell from what you have to do with output of notation software.

Yep, I do this every couple of years for my church. I publish it through Lulu press. Works out nice.

I can confirm the above. Luke does a really good job with this.
