Solo Soprano, Alto, or Tenor Repertoire for Confirmation Masses?
  • I'll be hiring another organist to play for one of my parish's confirmation Masses so that I can have the rare opportunity to cantor and sing more challenging vocal repertoire at Mass (a privilege for me - I, a singer who can "get by" on organ, am usually relegated to the organ bench and our cantors get to have all the fun). Is there any good Pentecost/Confirmation-themed repertoire for Soprano, Alto, or Tenor? I'm a tenor, but I can sing much alto rep, and can of course just sing a soprano work an octave down. I'm thinking about something in the general space of Mozart, Bach, Franck, etc.
  • I’d highly recommend the original unison version of Peter Hurford’s Litany to the Holy Spirit.

  • Marc, would you happen to have a copy?
  • Franck has a setting of the "Veni Creator" for solo tenor and bass with organ. Looks pretty neat, and would of course be very appropriate!

Richard Clark's setting of the Pentecost Sequence is an incredible modern art song for solo Tenor (or Soprano).

A hymn I found last year and set it to my own accompaniment. I taught it to the choir just before mass who then lead the congregation to sing it during mass.

  • Francis, the melody is by William H. Monk (Hymns Ancient and Modern, old editions), entitled St. Philip.
