Greetings from NE Scotland, advice wanted please
Our choir, like many others, has a lot of sopranos, some good readers, others not. This year, to improve the balance of the choir, I would like to explore some SSATB motets or English anthems, starting with easy ones because it will be a culture shock to the ladies not to be singing the top part.
The choir enjoyed performing the Byrd Ave Verum Corpus, so something not too difficult by him would be good, but all suggestions gratefully received.
    Thanks

I've attached a list of promising SSATB motets and Masses available on cpdl.org.

    Among my favorites are:

    Byrd – Confirma hoc Deus
    Dering – Ave virgo gloriosa
    Guerrero – Ave virgo sanctissima
    Lassus – Justorum animae
Palestrina – Ego sum panis vivus a 5
Victoria – Ascendens Christus / Ascendit Deus
    Victoria – Gaude Maria virgo

What an excellent list! Here are a few I have experience with, ranked by difficulty.

    Quite straightforward
    • Bruckner - Tantum ergo, WAB 42
    • Lassus - Justorum animae
    • Byrd - Terra tremuit (SATTB, but can be sung SSATB)

    Challenging (but rewarding)
    • Philips - Ascendit Deus
    • Philips - Christus Resurgens
    • Lassus - Surrexit Pastor Bonus
    • Sweelinck - Cantate Domino

    Very challenging
    • Sweelinck - Hodie Christus natus est
