    SUMMARY OF POSITION

    We are looking for a Director of Music to support the Catholic Service Congregation at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall, in Northern Virginia, on a weekly basis, consisting of approximately 10-12 hours per week.
    Pay: up to $37/hour
    This is a contractual position.

    PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

    The candidate shall primarily facilitate the communal, public worship life to enhance full and active participation of the congregation. The candidate shall plan, administer, and evaluate the quality of musical experiences in collaboration with the Military Chaplain. This include, but is not limited to
    • provide services for Catholic Congregation as the Music Director.
    • lead the congregation in worship while playing a piano/keyboard/organ (electric type keyboard) as the primary musical instrument
    • play the chapel organ or piano as dictated by the music selection
    • coordinate the approved musical selections with the Lead Chaplain, volunteers, contracted vocalists, musicians, and congregational coordinator for the service
    • arrive at each rehearsal prepared to execute an efficient and productive rehearsal plan with all singers and musicians with a pre-selected, 90-day music plan appropriate to the scheduled worship services. (The pre-selected music plan is a living document and song selections can be modified in consultation and with the final approval of the official representative)
    • provide all required and appropriate musical support, to include prelude and postlude, offertory, singing of hymns, chorus’, spiritual songs, and special music that enhances the atmosphere of worship, and other musical additions during designated worship services and rehearsals
    • support worship services/rehearsals on a weekly basis. Additional services may be added during holidays, holy days, or other religious observances. Worship services and rehearsals are generally limited to 90 minutes each.

    Maximum 624 hours a year (This includes set up, rehearsal/service, and clean up).


    • perform site preparation (set-up) and restoration (stowing musical equipment or other activities necessary to return facility to pre-service or pre-rehearsal configuration).
    • direct, coordinate, coach, and integrate all musicians, technicians, and vocalists involved with music ministry

    RESPONSIBILITIES MAY BE SPLIT: Candidate may split work with another co-director, granted the position is staffed 52 weeks for all scheduled services and rehearsals, and both candidates are expected to perform the work according to the procedures set in the contract.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    The ideal candidate shall possess a Bachelor Degree in Sacred Music, Musical Performance, or related field, along with relevant skills, experience, and/or training to perform the tasks outlines under “Primary responsibilities”. The requirements listed below are descriptive of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required:
    • have a professional and spiritual understanding of church music, determined by a history of working specifically in development of musical worship plans.
    • possess demonstrated experience as a music director in Catholic religious worship settings, experience in Catholic, and liturgical musical trends, and demonstrate a repertoire from these genres that are consistent with orthodox Catholic doctrine
    • have a demonstrated proficiency in playing a piano or similarly situation keyboard type musical instrument appropriate at public worship services
    • must possess the ability to perform musical pieces both by reading sheet music and by ear, demonstrating proficiency in both written notation and aural interpretation
    • must possess the ability to work with, and direct small musical ensembles and choirs
    • must be willing to undergo a background check
    • have excellent oral and written communication skills
