Organ Scholar/Assistant Organist - Cathedral of St. Paul, Birmingham
The Cathedral of St. Paul seeks a quarter-time Organ Scholar/Assistant Organist. The position can be structured as a mentored role for less experienced organists (scholar) or, for very qualified applicants, a full assistant job. Chief responsibilities include playing for (typically) one Sunday (or Saturday evening) Mass weekly, Wednesday choir rehearsal (weekly), some minor library work, playing all liturgies during the Director of Music's vacation/study leave, and Holy Day Masses and other liturgies as needed. There is the opportunity for some direction of the semi-professional Cathedral Choir and Childrens’ Schola, if desired. The Cathedral pipe organ is the Anna Catharine Grace Memorial Pipe Organ (2021 Noack Organ Company Op. 164, 3m/75rk) in exceptional acoustics. This position will provide the scholar/assistant with excellent opportunities to perform organ literature and accompany choral repertoire from the Medieval period to the 21st Century in beautiful, well-executed liturgies. Competitive pay for time (especially for very qualified applicants) and modest continuing education allowance.
Interested applicants should email cover letter, resume, and references to Bruce Ludwick, Jr., Director of Music and Organist, ASAP or by Sunday, December 31, 2023. A full job description is available on request.
