  • On Thursday, we sang
    Mass II
    Credo I
    Byrd's Ave Verum
and the Solemn Tone Salve Regina

This morning, for the External Solemnity, we sang no polyphony, but we did have the processional music instead. We chanted Ave Verum, Anima Christi and Jesu Dulcis Memoria, supplementarily.

Next year, or perhaps a little further along, I'll aim to sing Wood's Oculi omnium -- the shorter one, since he has two, and Byrd's Sacerdotes Domini

Is a sequence required for Corpus Christi in the NO? We did not have one this year, which I did not miss since we usually hear a modern one that I cannot stand. We did have a simple procession and Benediction which was very nice.

The Lauda Sion (or shorter version of the last 4 stanzas) is an optional sequence in the NO. We used the English translation with the traditional melody from Source and Summit this year.

  • Emac,

Is the option to use the last 4 verses instead of the whole text, or to use either the last 4 verses or nothing at all?

In the OF you may sing the whole thing, or the last four stanzas, or nothing at all.

  • Trenton,

Thank you for the data points. I wish they weren't true, but the fact that they are true punctuates the claim that the Ordo of Paul VI isn't a stable rite.

It's certainly strange to make one of the few sequences left entirely optional.

Organ music was all set by the organist without my interference, but I know I heard variations of Adoro te Devote and Pange Lingua in there

  • Thank you, Chris!

Wilmington is just west of Long Beach in southern California. It's a pretty poor area but the church is an absolute gem with an incredible acoustic (but mediocre organ, especially for that space). The money for the professional musicians is raised by one of the priests who himself is a capable musician--there's certainly no way the parish community could afford it, but he finds donors and will even be outside the church after Mass with a basket and a sign saying "Donations for Sacred Music." It's been a joy to work with him, as he gives me pretty free rein over the rep, just wants it to be as beautiful and reverent as possible. We only do non-Sunday feasts and solemnities about once a month or so, as the volunteer parish choir sings on Sundays.
  • Clara,

    You're most welcome.
    God bless that priest!

By the way: Happy Patronal Feast on Thursday.

  • Thank you! Just had Mass for the feast last night, used the same Mass setting but with Byrd's Constitues Eos for Offertory and Pearsall's Tu es Petrus. One of the singers has his master's in chant, it was interesting to hear how he sang the introit, in the semiology-informed newer style. (I had each of the remaining propers sung solo by a different singer.)
