I. JOB SUMMARY

St. Thomas More Newman Center is the home to Buckeye Catholics at The Ohio State University. We are seeking a full-time Director of Music. The Director of Music sees themselves as a missionary disciple in service of the church who uses music as a means of evangelization and formation.

The Director of Music works with the pastor, assistant director, choir members, cantors, and other musicians to offer praise to God through sacred music. He/she is responsible for providing a sacred music program that beautifies the liturgy and draws the faithful into more active participation in the Sacred Mysteries. Therefore, the director of music must have a thorough understanding of the Church’s liturgy and sacred music tradition. He/she must also excel at recruiting, motivating, and training students of various ages and skill levels. Given our proximity to Ohio State’s Music School with an exceptional music program, there are many opportunities to collaborate with trained musicians.

The Director of Music is responsible for ensuring that all weekend, holy day, and special masses have music available. Our mass times currently are 5:30 pm Saturday anticipatory Mass, as well as the 10, 12, 6 pm, and 9 pm Masses on Sunday. In the summer the Mass schedule is as follows: Saturday 5:30, Sunday at 10 and 12. Mass times are subject to change. Due to the nature of the position, the music minister will need to be willing to work with a non-traditional schedule.

II. ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Play the piano for weekend liturgies (Saturday 5:30, Sunday 10, 12, 6, 9), Holy Days, Funerals, Weddings, and other special liturgies
2. Direct and rehearse choirs/cantors for various liturgies (usually one hour before each Mass as well as some additional weekday rehearsals)
3. Recruit and develop choirs/cantors on a regular basis
4. Prepare music for choir/musicians and music slides for the screen for each weekend.
5. Coordinate schedules of musicians for each liturgy (cantors and accompanists)
6. Train and Mentor student singers and accompanists.
7. Organize periodic music programs for students and the wider community (e.g., Advent Lessons and Carols, Tenebrae Service, Solemn Vespers)
8. Attend all Staff Meetings
9. Ensure all music is used/reprinted in compliance with copyright laws 
10. Arrange for regular maintenance of piano, soundboard, speakers, and other equipment
11. Train and schedule lectors and Eucharistic Ministers for weekend masses
12. Additional Sacristan duties as assigned (Seasonal decoration, cleaning sacred vestments, etc.)
13. Other duties as assigned

III. Experience:

1. Minimum 3 years of parish music experience or similar experience is required.
2. Knowledge of all Catholic liturgical music documents and Catholic liturgy required
3. Proficiency in piano skills.
4. Experiencing leader groups of musicians in liturgical settings
5. Familiarity with the Liturgical Guidelines for the Diocese of Columbus with principles and dimensions of the catholic faith formation
