Hurd Mass of the Immigrants

    Anyone heard Bob Hurd's bilingual Mass of the Immigrants / Misa del Pueblo Inmigrante? My parish switched to it after Christmas this year. It's rythmic and folky with chorus and verses. I kinda hate it. The music sheets provided only have music for the chorus, and with the jerky rythm it's hard to sing thoses verses without any music. Wonder if anyone has thoughts on it? Maybe someone can explain why some highly trained musicians (our music director is very skilled) are drawn to music of this kind? What are they seeing in it?

    I dislike it too. I also dislike the setting's gratuitously politicized title. The title is understood to be really silly as soon as you begin to think about why there would be a Mass "of the immigrants" generically that uses only the English and Spanish languages. There's obviously a political motivation lurking behind the title.

    Refrain Glorias should be banned. The recording allocates the Gloria's "verses" to a soloist, which is not the way the Mass ordinary should be sung.

    Musical skill is not the same as knowledge of what music is suitable for Catholic liturgy.

    Spanish music written by not-Spanish people is not the same as Spanish people writing Spanish music.

    You and I agree completely on the banning of refrain Glorias, and also on the idea that musical skill isn't the same as knowledge of what is suitable in Catholic liturgy.

    I haven't listened to it yet, so I can't say, for sure, that it's rubbish masquerading as music.

    Here's a question: does this setting of the Mass accurately portray the intended ethos of the Ordo of Paul VI?

    I'm going to say yes. But I believe that Ordo was created in malice.
    But if you mean FCAP... only bilingual members of the congregation will understand what's going on. And those are few. While we're being inclusive of other languages, why not Vietnamese, or Tagalog, or Hausa, or all the above? One word for every language that Catholicism is practiced in? Or Esperanto maybe? "But everyone knows the Ordinary!" Just like they did in 1963.

    As for the politically tendentious title...pretty much every Mass ever created on the North American continent is a Mass of the Immigrants. Even the settings in Native American languages were mostly created by non-Native Americans

    I just love "Kyrie, Litany of Praise"es. Seems legit.

    The Santo sounds like it needs castanets and a couple dancing in the square while onlookers sip on their margaritas.

    trentonjconn - certainly the ordinariate is within the Roman Rite, the missal starts with GIRM (102 pages) before adding 11 pages of modifications. And the Office gives clear directives on how those with an obligation to the Office may use either form interchangeably.
    Of course if both the daily Mass in Latin at Westminster Cathedral and the Sunday celebrations at St Sabina are within the Roman Rite, perhaps the claim does not amount to much, but apparently all are expressions of the unique lex orandi.
