    Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney
    St Mary’s Cathedral
    Director of Music

St Mary’s Cathedral is the mother church of Australia and spiritual heart of the Archdiocese of Sydney.

The tradition of choral music at St Mary’s has been developed and maintained for over two hundred years as a musical heritage of inestimable value. The Cathedral Choir is now the oldest surviving musical ensemble and only fully professional cathedral choir in the country. While it specialises in chant and renaissance polyphony, its repertoire extends through all periods to today.

Cantors and choir support the daily services in the Cathedral and especially solemn Masses on Sundays and Solemnities, the Triduum, ordinations and state occasions. The Archdiocese of Sydney is deeply committed to the continued flourishing of choral liturgical music at St Mary’s Cathedral and to supporting the Cathedral Choir as it continues to evolve.

St Mary’s Cathedral is seeking its next Director of Music, responsible for ensuring that the Cathedral offers outstanding choral music for the worship of God. The Director of Music manages the Cathedral Music Department and Choir, including the training and direction of the Cathedral choristers.

The Director of Music will bring a proven record of exemplary performance of Church music at the highest professional level, incorporating child choristers and professional adult singers, and a well-developed appreciation and understanding of the liturgical-musical traditions and devotional-pastoral practices of the Catholic Church. The appointee will be a highly accomplished leader with the ability to engage broadly with stakeholders and community.

The Archdiocese of Sydney will be supported in its search for this appointment by the executive search firm Korn Ferry. For further information, including receiving a copy of the Position Description, or to register your interest, applicants should contact Grace Tan at stmary_music@kornferry.com

The closing date for applications is COB Friday 10 February 2023.

The Archdiocese is wholly committed to ensuring the safety, well-being and dignity of all children, and acknowledges its important legal, moral and spiritual responsibility to create a safe and nurturing environment for those children.
Additionally, the Archdiocese is committed to continuous improvement to assess and address the risk of modern slavery in its operations and supply chains and to report annually on these actions in the form of a Modern Slavery Statement.
