Chant manuscript....
  • National Public Radio has a story about a man who went to an estate sale. There he found a chant manuscript.

Here's the story, but I wish there were so much more detail in the story.

  • I was rather jealous of that chap, to put it mildly! Lol I have some folios myself, but nothing of that prestigious an ilk with illuminations.

Very cool... isn’t there someone who practices this art today? Seems to me it was posted here some time ago.
  • I do know that a new Bible was made in the old fashion by some monks a few years ago; it came as part of an exhibition to a monastery nearby where we used to live. It was very impressive. As I recall, it was quite expensive and took nearly a decade to produce. So yes, it is still happening, but it’s exceedingly rare.

There are artists in Etsy who are creating one-offs, but that’s different than a whole Bible or psalter.

I do believe that the Benedictines of St. Cecilia's Abbey in Ryde, England still make their own manuscripts for Chant. Here is a link to some they sell. But I have also seen some pictures of them with actual chant books written out by them. https://stceciliasabbey.org.uk/shop/calligraphy/

  • I've often thought that a choirbook would make a great school project.

Even more grisly fates than dismemberment have befallen our Citizen Kane's hoard. One of the halls at San Simeon is lined with chant lampshades.
