at Saint David of Wales Catholic Church, 5641 Esmond Ave. Richmond CA 94805
Join us on Mardi Gras for Vespers of our patron saint, with chants from the 14th century Penpont Antiphoner. In addition to the English Psalms and hymns which all are invited to sing, experienced choral singers who are able to rehearse beforehand at 6:00 sharp are welcome to join the parish choir in the Magnificat from the First Service by the Tudor composer Thomas Thomkins, son of the organist at St David’s Cathedral in Wales.
Here's an invitation to sing Vespers for St. David of Wales at St. David of Wales Church this St. David's Day, March 1. Singers will meet in the rectory garage (6541 Esmond Ave, Richmond 94805, across the corner from the church's front door) at 5:00 to rehearse before singing the hour long service in the church at 6:10.
Music is available on CPDL and I'll be updating details at my CPDL page. Attached is the program, with Douglas' Iste confessor.
If you can join and you'd like hard copy please let me know in time to print extras!
As an aside you have listed under the Liber chants which one would use if using the common the antiphon Dum esset summus Pontifex, but Amavit eum is the antiphon; the former is only for Supreme Pontiffs. As it happens, one would have used it at Vespers on Jan 18 and again on this past Sunday in the evening to mark the commemoration of the Chair of St Peter. I think that James Gibb also missed this in the note on the Marenzio page (because it’s not Vespers of any pontiff…), unfortunately an all too-common occurrence at CPDL and elsewhere.
Thanks, Matthew, you're talking about my user page where I gathered thoughts about potential polyphony: Amavit eum is in fact richer in settings. The Commons categories at CPDL are rather makeshift and could indeed do with more attention.
It was a weekend of many choral conflicts and we had a tiny turnout this time. To my delight a couple of curious travelers had made a detour just to see if anything happened to be up at a St David's church on St David's Day.
