Director of Music - Church of St. Mark, Saint Paul, MN
  • Description:
The mission of the Church of St. Mark is to live and share Christ’s call to holiness. Our Core Values are: Sacraments, Family, Catholic, Formation & Evangelization, and Service.

The Church of St. Mark is a musically active, “singing” parish, and actively supports Sacred Music as an integral part of its mission of reverent celebration of the sacraments. At the core of this musical mission is enabling parishioners to enter more deeply into the Mass through active participation, whether in an external sense through singing, or in an internal sense through quiet contemplation and prayer. As a congregation and music ministry, we are constantly striving to foster a culture of sung liturgy: singing the Mass, rather than simply singing at Mass. We seek to utilize the rich sacred music treasury of the Catholic Church, especially Gregorian Chant, while simultaneously embracing the repertoire of newly-composed Sacred Music. The music director will be an essential part of carrying out this mission, and serve as a core staff member.

    Parish musical resources include:
46 rank Hendrickson pipe organ- built in 1980, updated in 2016.
Grand piano in main church, and several other pianos throughout the campus.
Current hymnal: Worship, 3rd Edition, along with Lumen Christi Missal in pews.
Subscription to Source and Summit liturgy platform, OneLicense, and CCLI.

    Qualifications:
    Practicing Catholic in good standing.
Bachelors degree in Music, or equivalent training, experience, and competency.
    Masters degree in Music preferred.
    Excellent organ and piano skills.
Strong vocal music background, including experience in choral conducting and knowledge of classical choral repertoire from the Renaissance to present.
Background in or willingness to learn Gregorian Chant and its application in the liturgy.
Strong familiarity with the liturgical rites of the Roman Catholic Church.
Knowledge of, or willingness to learn the various Church documents concerning liturgy and Sacred Music.
Five years of musical experience working in a parish setting.

    Essential Job Duties:
In cooperation with parish clergy, prepare weekly music plans for Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation, incorporating the propers of the Mass in Latin or English, as well as hymns and choral music appropriate for the liturgical season and readings of the day.
Serve as primary organist for the parish, playing organ and occasionally piano for three Masses per weekend.
Serve as primary cantor for 5pm Sunday Mass (Novus Ordo celebrated in Latin) or arrange for a cantor for these Masses.
Coordinate, schedule, and train volunteer cantors.
Direct the parish Adult and Children’s choirs.
Coordinate music and serve as primary organist for all parish funerals and weddings (additional stipend).
Serve as member of the Liturgy Committee, and assist in planning large liturgical celebrations, especially the musical aspects thereof.
