Summary: The Director of Liturgical Music, in collaboration with the pastor and other staff members, is responsible for providing sacred music, directing the cantor/choir, and promoting the full, active, and conscious participation of the faithful in accord with the Church documents on sacred music. This is a part-time, 15 hours per week position.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
-Plan and provide organ music (Casavant) and direct cantor/choir for weekend liturgies (Saturday 4 pm, Sunday 10:30 am) and other special liturgies such as Holy Days, Triduum, weddings, funerals, and other devotions -Communicate music selection to cantors and choir members well in advance, ensure that they are prepared, and update the hymn board in the Church -Lead weekly choir rehearsal, recruit volunteers for choir, recruit musicians for special liturgical celebrations, and if necessary recruit and train new cantors -Ensure that musicians and singers who express interest in becoming involved in music ministry possess an appropriate level of musicianship and knowledge of/love for Catholic liturgy -Coordinate liturgical services for weddings and funerals, and ensure coverage if necessary -Create programs/worship aids for special liturgies -Perform administrative duties such as preparing and adhering to budget, scheduling maintenance of instruments, and attending staff and liturgical meetings
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
-Bachelor's degree in music or related field strong preferred -Practicing Catholic preferred -Proficient in organ, piano, choral conducting and vocal coaching -Prior experience as liturgical musician, preferably in a Catholic parish -Knowledge of the treasury of sacred music in the Catholic Church as well as Catholic liturgical rites and Church documents on the liturgy and sacred music -Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and collaborative skill; ability to supervise volunteer and paid members of the music ministry
