Does anyone know the name or provenance of this painting? I am remembering it titled as St. Bernard preaches the crusade, but have never been able to locate it since.
Google image search yields: Bernard de Clairvaux et la deuxième croisade (and the second crusade)
Further: English: Fresco from Speyer cathedral 1930 Deutsch: Schraudolph Fresko aus dem nördlichen Querschiff des Speyerer Doms: "St. Bernhard übergibt das Kreuzbanner an König Konrad III." Schraudolph fresco from the north transept of the Speyer Cathedral: "St. Bernhard hands over the cross banner to King Konrad III." The kneeling king has the facial features of the cathedral capitular Molitor, who was friends with the artist and who took an active part in the painting of the cathedral.
Johann Schraudolph (1808-1879) was commissioned by Ludwig I of Bavaria for the painting of the frescoes for the cathedral of Speyer. "The unifying conception of all the frescoes is the divine plan of salvation, with special reference to the Blessed Virgin and the other patron saints of the cathedral, the deacon Stephen, Pope St. Stephen, and St. Bernard."
