    Director of Sacred Music at the Cathedral of Ss. Simon and Jude - Phoenix, AZ


    The newly renovated Cathedral Parish of Ss. Simon and Jude in Phoenix, AZ is seeking a full-time Director of Sacred Music to continue the local legacy of sacred music at a time when pandemic and construction have created an opportunity for renewal and reinvigoration. The Director of Sacred Music will be deeply imbued with the spirit of the liturgy and will direct and build a parish program that is in accord with the Catholic Church’s great tradition of sacred music, as it is understood and shown forth by the mind of the Church. A loving concern for youth will motivate the director’s support of and collaboration with the Cathedral School.


    The Director of Sacred Music at the Cathedral of Ss. Simon and Jude will direct the activity of all sacred music at the cathedral for all major liturgies, including some diocesan and pontifical Masses. The Director will recruit, schedule, musically train, and provide ongoing liturgical catechesis for cantors and choir members, fostering in them a loving commitment to the Church and Her sacred liturgy. The Director will have the ability to draw the choir members and all the faithful into a deeper actual participation in the liturgical rites. The director will work with the Cathedral’s part-time Principal Organist, providing direction, and will on occasion direct and/or manage other paid organists and musicians.


    Professional and Personal Representation:

    • Practicing Catholic who models fidelity to the Church’s teaching on faith and morals in their personal life.

    • Is a team player, adept at working collaboratively with the cathedral rector, parish staff, and school staff.

    • Represents the rector at all meetings of choirs, cantors, advisory committees.

    • Possesses a deep personal love and respect for the Liturgy as the source and summit of the Church’s life and missionary activity and has a desire to foster this with others.

    • Has a degree in the field of sacred music or equivalent experience.

    • Has a thorough knowledge of the various liturgical books, church documents and rubrics.

    • Has expertise in Gregorian chant, sacred polyphony and choral music, proper antiphons, and of hymnody appropriate to Catholic liturgy.

    • Has the proficiency in Spanish, English, and Latin that is required for musical arrangement.

    • Has proficiency and experience in choir and cantor training, conducting, liturgical catechesis, managing volunteers, recruiting volunteers, and proper organizational skills.

    • Ability to maintain confidentiality, especially in all conversations with staff and the rector.



    Job Duties:

    • Provide/oversee/plan music for six weekend Masses (4:30 PM Saturday, 7:00 AM, 9:00 AM (televised), 11:00 AM Masses in English, and 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM Masses in Spanish), regular school Masses, Weddings, Funerals, Confirmations, Holy Days of Obligation, and some diocesan liturgies, such as the Chrism Mass.

    • Serve as director/conductor for liturgies and choir rehearsals.

    • Build a vision and plan, in direct collaboration with the rector and staff, for fostering authentic and fruitful participation of the laity in the sacred liturgy by both congregational singing and active listening.

    • Collaborate with Cathedral School music teacher to enrich music education.

    • Manage both volunteers and paid members of the parish Sacred Music Department.

    • Recruit members for the various choirs and instrument ensembles of the parish and provide ongoing continuing education and formation in sacred music for all members of these groups.

    • Additional responsibilities as developed in collaboration with the rector.
